Back to Nature Ecotourism is the only eco-homestay located this deep inside Gunung Leuser. A 40-minute walk from Bukit Lawang leads you into 100 hectares of protected forest, land we have protected for years, not developed, not exploited.
Here, the jungle is not a backdrop. It is home; for wildlife, for our team, and for guests who choose to stay closer, longer, and more responsibly.

WHAT YOU EXPERIENCE HERE
Ethical Jungle Treks
Walk deep into Gunung Leuser National Park with local guides who know this forest as home. Small groups, respectful distances, and a pace shaped by the jungle — not a schedule.
Fall asleep to the sound of the river and wake to birds, gibbons, and forest light. Simple, comfortable eco-lodging designed to blend in — not stand out.
Here, days unfold naturally. Guests stay longer, walk further, and leave with more than photos — a deeper connection to nature and the people who protect it.
“Stories from people who walked 40 minutes to get here.”
What our guests say
One Man. One Forest. Since 1999.
Founded in 1999, Back to Nature began as one man’s decision to protect forest land, not profit from it. What started as a personal mission has grown into a small, family-run eco-lodge surrounded by private rainforest.
Every stay directly supports rainforest conservation in Bukit Lawang.
You can book directly through our website, or contact us via WhatsApp/email. We will confirm your preferred trek length and dates, and no prepayment is needed — you simply pay on arrival.
Comfortable hiking shoes, light clothing, a reusable water bottle, mosquito repellent, a rain poncho, and a small backpack. We provide all meals, camping equipment, and a certified guide.
Bukit Lawang is one of the best places in the world to spot Sumatran orangutans in the wild. While sightings cannot be 100% guaranteed, the chances are very high, especially on longer treks.
We can arrange private transport for you from Medan, Kualanamu Airport, or other locations in North Sumatra. The journey takes around 3–4 hours by car.
